Summary

The classic view is that we are mainly guided through the world by our senses, but in fact the bulk of the work is done by an internal model of the world that we hold in our brains.  This internal model handles everything that we do subconsciously (the vast majority), and our consciousness only steps in when there is a mismatch between our senses and the model’s predictions, or we begin an action that is outside the model’s scope.  It might not feel that way, but, far from being who we are, our consciousness, if it is anything, is just a very small part.
